Landing Net Building

I like projects, for some reason I just like to make things. After looking at wooden landing nets on the internet I thought to myself I can make those. I did not take any pictures of the bending, glueing, and shaping process. Nor did I take any of the machining the brass ring. I will probably do that in a future blog because I would like to make a net for the boat so I will be making more.

Here are two nets that are in process, I could not decide if I wanted a net with fiddle back maple handle or a burl walnut handle so I made both.

The maple net has a walnut hoop and the walnut one has a maple hoop.
To install the net I placed the frame in my bench vise and then clipped the net in place with Boston clips. This helps keep the net even while sewing the net in.
To keep tension on the thread while sewing I put a sharpened dowel in the last hole that I sewed. This allows me to get the tension correct withot having to worry about the previous holes loosening up.
Here are the two nets, I chose to do one with a traditional bag and one with a modern plastic bag. I know that the plastic is better for the fish but I am not sure I am a fan of it. We shall see.

  1. Great looking nets Brad. Trust me on this one, you'll curse those nylon nets after your first time fighting to get your fly out of it once you land a fish with it. You'll spend ten minutes trying to free it when fish are raising all over the place. I've been there many times. We need to break it in at Cachuma!

  2. Thanks Charles, I am going to be making a bigger one for the boat soon. I will blog the whole build. Let me know when you want to go to the lake. I have a boat (it's not pretty)but it floats!

  3. Brad, Lovely nets. I'm hoping you've caught a few fish by now. Which net material do you prefer?

  4. Miles, Thanks for the kind comment.

I have only tried the one with the clear plastic bag and it works fine. I have not had a chance to try the nylon mesh net.

I need to get out and do more fishing, I have been spending a lot of time in the Vineyard lately.
